Best Ideas to Celebrate Valentine’s Day 2015

January 27, 2015

Valentine’s Day was first associated with romance back in the middle ages. The Victorians really brought cards and Valentine’s Day together though. In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day cards. Since then we have been declaring our love secretly and not so secretly to our valentines all over the world. From the first every handmade valentines card to the mass produced cards available now, there are so many traditional ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Traditional cards are exchanged, chocolates bought and red roses given with women purchasing approximately 85 percent of all Valentine’s Day gifts. Apparently teachers are the luckiest on Valentine’s Day and will receive the most Valentines cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.

Couple Cooking

The traditional route for Valentine’s Day is probably the safest if you are in a new relationship or just traditionalist at heart. You could send your loved one a heart shaped box of chocolates. A twist on chocolates would be to make your own and pop into a gift box. Or maybe you are the flower type and want to go with the traditional red roses. These are sold singularly or in bunch. A more modern twist would be a bunch of wild flowers, maybe picked together on a walk. Cuddly toys are a new addition to the traditional list and come in all sizes, colours and shapes.

But there are also other ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day that can make it truly memorable and unique to the both of you. You could give your other half a date night box. Fill it with things like marshmallows for toasting on the fire, chocolates, their favourite snacks, a bottle of fizz or their favourite tipple and maybe a DVD of a favourite movie. Good movie ideas for Valentine’s Day are, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sleepless in Seattle, Crazy Stupid Love, and The Notebook, Love actually, Ghost, While You Were Sleeping and Notting Hill.

You could get both of you to write down 5 things that your other half does that you love. Maybe they give the most wonderful foot massage or cook the best ever cheese on toast. Then you could exchange lists and surprise each other with something from the list on Valentine’s Day. Or both create a list of things that make each of you happy. Like flowers in a vase next to bed or having a bath ran with candles. Exchange lists and then both surprise each other by doing or organising something from each other’s happy list throughout the week or month.

Romantic dates at a restaurant are high on everyone’s must do list. But restaurants get booked up and can be very expensive. Why not cook a meal together. It could be a new recipe that you both have never tried. The learning together and cooking together can be romantic and fun, plus you’ll have lovely meal at the end of it.

Valentine Gifts

Still on the food theme, what about a romantic getaway. Valentine’s Day falls in the coldest of weather but a picnic can still be fun and romantic if you wrap up warm and take flasks of hot chocolate. Pack an extra blanket to keep you warm and watch the sun set at your favourite scenic place.

Remind your other half you love them with post it notes. Leave a trail of love notes around the house. Some can be in obvious places others could be hidden well so they are not all found on the same day. You can be adventurous with your notes by writing some that’s complimentary or maybe a special memory that you both have. Or maybe something you would like to do with your loved one.

How about the old fashioned mix tape.  When mix tapes were first made the only available type was on cassette players. This gave way to cd’s and memory sticks. You can make them visual too by adding photos of you both together which can be watched on a computer.

If you’re not coupled up at Valentine’s Day it doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Get your other single friends together and celebrate your friendships. In Finland Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates into “Friend’s Day”. Buy each other treat and cook a meal together or all go out for a meal.
